The Theatre Institute (founded in 1961) is a modern European institution under the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic and its mission is to provide Slovak and international public with complete information services regarding theatre.

The priority of the Theatre Institute is its scientific, research and publishing activity mainly oriented on research of Slovak drama and theatre from establishing of the first permanent professional theatre stage in 1920 until today. Also in co-operation with its partner institutions it participates in various research activities concerning general theatre culture in Slovakia and abroad, it takes part in organizing scientific symposiums, seminars, colloquia and other forms of presentations. Another important function performed by the Theatre Institute is the information and promotion activity and systematic informing of the public about history as well as contemporary theatre. It also provides information regarding Slovak theatre or theatre in other countries; it prepares various statistics on theatre and analyses of cultural policies.


Education of professionals as well as the general public has been a long-term priority of the Theatre Institute carried out in the form of single and year-long seminars, lectures and educational cycles throughout Slovakia. It is oriented mostly on young artists, cultural workers, teachers, students and young people with the main objective to spur new methods in artistic education and a creative approach in working with young people.

The long-lasting project called New Writing and especially its educational platform Dramatically Young is designed for elementary and secondary schools students and teachers of artistic schools. Its main objective is education of young people focusing on dramatic writing, deepening of the relationship of children and young people with theatre and support of informal creative education.

The Theatre Institute organizes cultural and educational events – independently or within a co-operation – using for this purpose its own multi-media space – The Studio 12. It also organizes the Nová dráma/New Drama Festival and the DRÁMA competition for the best Slovak play.


Constantly updated website, www.theatre.sk, offers information on the activity, projects and work of the Theatre Institute as well as the most integrated view on theatre culture in Slovakia in Slovak and English language. Theatre Institute is the member of networks of international and non-governmental institutions (ITI, ENICPA, IETM, SIBMAS, Culture Action Europe, FIRT, AICT).
